What are terpenes

What are Terpenes

An Essential Oil

What are Terpenes, they are little gems that provide the Cannabis smells and tastes. They are a large and diverse group of naturally occurring organic compounds. The largest particles of essential oils

different varieties

Every variety of Cannabis plant has a different terpene profile.

They produce distinctive aromas and fruity or earthy tones.  Similarly, as the aroma in food adds to the taste, terpenes’ aroma adds to the benefits of taking CBD.

The gift that keeps on giving

They enhance the benefits of CBD, with an array of elements.  Subsequently, they carry similar benefits to CBD.

Each variety of Hemp is different and possesses different levels of flavonoids and lipids (fatty acids).  Sadly, some are lost during the process of extraction.  Due to the drying process of the buds, some of the little gems do not survive.

They are so delicate, that many of them are removed, before the cleaning process of the CBD extraction.  After that, they can be added back to CBD Oils once they have been cleaned and cooled. Generally, Terpenes are added back to the same batch from which they were removed.

broadspectrum

When you hear the term broad-spectrum or full-spectrum, it is describing the state of the CBD if it includes terpenes and cannabinoids. A Broad Spectrum cannabinoid will have the terpenes removed.

what are weed terpenes

A common question is;

Are weed terpenes the same as food terpenes? Yes, similarly Food and cannabis share the same terpenes.

There are over 100 naturally occurring Terpenes in Hemp

Here are just a few:

Limonene

Lemon/Limonene occurs in many foods and can be found in Lemon, Orange rind, and Juniper.  The citrus aroma comes from the Limonene.  Likewise, the cannabinoids carry similar benefits;

Useful for their antibacterial properties, help with digestion, and mild sedative effects.  They also stimulate weight loss and assist with stress.  The beautiful lemon aroma from Hemp & Cannabis comes from this Terpene.

Myrcene

Is considered the most important one.

Myrcene is present at high levels in a lot of herbs and commonly used in a lot of food flavourings. Has a musky, earthy taste and is found in hops, lemongrass and Mangos.

Wonderful Myrcene acts as an anti-inflammatory muscle relaxant and just like Limonene as a sedative.

Caryophyllene

Is pegged as the most dramatic Terpene due to its vast properties.

It’s found in many herbs and condiments, to name a few:

  • pepper
  • cloves
  • rosemary
  • oregano
  • cinnamon
  • basil

This beauty provides a party of aromas from floral to earthy to citrus to earthy.  Called beta-caryophyllene, you will find this as an ingredient in most aromatic oils. Caryo is a bigger molecule than the above terpenes.  It is a rare one that carries many direct benefits

our Suggestion

So next time someone asks What are Terpenes? you can tell them.  Terpene Oil can be purchased, giving you the smell and tastes of the plant without the CBD or THC.

Great to use in cooking or smoking, create your Vape Oils or Vape Juices.
