Is CBD safe for pets?

It’s a great question; is CBD safe for pets? the answer is Yes, however, we cannot create a pet range. Why? let’s look into it.

Interestingly, the Veterinary world is the only space in the UK you can refer to CBD Oil as ‘Medicine’.

CBD is a Medicine

CBD for Pets is classed as a ‘Veterinary Medicinal Product’ currently no one in the UK is licenced for Animal CBD products.

Subsequently, only a Vet could prescribe it, That is if indeed a licenced product existed.

At present, Big Chief Hemp is unable to craft you an animal CBD Oil product.

But let’s look at the idea of CBD for your pets.

Endocannabinoids Naturally occurring Receptors present in every Mammal

Let’s consider how CBD works with your endocannabinoid system (ECS for short).

Endocannabinoids also referred to as ‘endogenous cannabinoids’, are a bunch of neurotransmitters. 

They send out signals to regulate the body. We have CB1 and CB2 receptors receiving the signals.

Cannabinoid receptors are present in your brain and body and these are the most abundant receptors in the human brain.

The ECS regulates a whole host of operations within your body such as:

As recently as the 1940s it was a large staple of their diet, most of our livestock consumed hemp. 

Most farm animals would be fed on straw and hemp as most farmers had to grow the crop.

It seems, there was such an abundance of hemp, it makes perfect sense animals and humans consumed it as part of their diet.  Hemp was such a valuable commodity; it was used as currency to pay debts.

At present, we don’t have much scientific evidence for CBD and pets, but we do have one or two studies.

In addition, we have anecdotal evidence from owners. They report

There is a theory, that CBD Oils will treat most conditions in pets the same as it does for humans such as epilepsy and IBS pain.

A study in Colorado ‘Seeking the Efficacy of Cannabidiol Treatment in Osteoarthritic Dogs. 

It was a randomised, placebo-controlled experiment.   An owner and veterinarian double-blind, cross-over trial.

Twenty-two dogs had been X-rayed and confirmed to have osteoarthritis.

The dogs; depending on their size were given 2mg and 8mg doses over a 24hour period. 

Our scientists observed an increase in activity and a decrease in pain. The news is looking good!

So CBD would be a gentle alternative for the stomach.

We currently use NSAIDs (Ibuprofen) to treat osteoarthritis but this is known to have awful effects on our dog’s tummy and affects their kidney function.

In addition to reporting the good stuff, Side effects have been reported, as well as benefits.

  • It may cause drowsiness in dogs.
  • Dry mouths have also been reported.
  • High doses have temporarily lowered blood pressure.

Please note

If your pets are using prescribed medication by their Vet. It is best to avoid CBD.

CBD can interfere with the medication, the reason being, that the medications may use the same pathways.

Always consult your Vet before you give your pets CBD.

These twenty-one researchers joined another team of twelve from the University of Louisville and created a survey of 1212 US patients taking prescription CBD 100mgs, Cannabidiol inhibits SARS-CoV-2.

The results on CBD returned lower COVID-19 test rates than the opposite control groups with similar medical backgrounds who did not take CBD Oil.

This group furthered the study with mice and concluded that ‘Future studies to explore the optimal means of CBD delivery to patients along with clinical trials will be needed to further evaluate the promise of CBD as a therapeutic to block SARS-CoV-2 infection.

Hemp CBD Oil is the latest health product to hit the shelves. It’s being advertised like snake oil to cure ills.  Not quite but it does offer enormous benefits.  It is extracted from the ‘Hemp’ plant.  A non-intoxicating plant. Safe for you and your whole family.

What is the best extraction process for CBD Oil?

Ultimately the three main ways to extract CBD.

  •     Oil Extraction
  •     CO2 Extraction
  •     Solvent Extraction

With pros and cons to each method.  CBD Extraction is a highly skilled process. It can take a lot of expensive equipment.

many ways to milk a seed

A company in Canada use a large wooden screw to press the buds.  It’s a natural and traditional method dating back hundreds of years.  This is our favourite method because it’s a whole plant extract.

The hemp flowers are soaked in refined oil, usually Coconut Oil.  Coconut oil is chosen because it’s a thin oil.  Damp buds are popped into the top of a funnel and dropped through to the screw.  The screw is turned and the buds are pressed.  Tightly pressed so Hemp oil comes out the other side.  CBD Oil resembles the consistency of honey with a green tinge.  The end product is a beautiful golden-green juice.  A full plant extract with the CBDs, flavonoids and Terpenes.

Below is a simplified version of the process

CO2 is Carbon Dioxide, compressed air.  It is a gas that consists of one part carbon & two parts oxygen.  It’s Non-combustible and nontoxic. I’ll try and cut through the science of the CBD oil CO2 extraction process.

Hemp buds are dropped into a high-pressure chamber and the chamber is sealed.

Advanced Liquid Co2

Advanced Liquid Co2 is added (supercritical C02) to the chamber.  High pressure is applied from the top of the device. Plunged, pushing Co2 liquid through the buds.  Hemp buds sit with the CO2 for a couple of hours.  The mush is pushed into the third chamber, a separator machine.

Final Chamber

Evaporation occurs in the third and final chamber removing the CO2 and leaving a lovely oil at the end.  CO2 is the preferred method of extraction because there are no solvents used.  No impurities are added and it’s fully automated.  From there it goes straight into products pure and unmolested.

Distilled CBD

A step for further refinement and distillation.  We go to a traditional laboratory. Lots of jars and tubes to condensers.  Temperature plays the biggest role in this process.  It’s a system of heating liquids and cooling liquids then catching vapers.  Crude hemp oil is heated up in a boiling flask to around 230c.  This flask sits inside a heated box, which stirs and heats the oil.  The oil creates vapers, and the vapers are caught in a tall distillation glass.

The vaper travels to a cooling chamber.  In this cooling chamber, the vapour turns back into a liquid.  This liquid travels down the chamber to the second set of flasks.    Three flasks, two collect terpenes, solvents, and undesirable bits.  The final One collects the CBD Distillate, CBD Gold.

Further refinement in a centrifugal machine  A CBD Ethanol extraction process is used.  Ethanol is added to the hemp buds.  The buds are added to a machine, and it spins and separates each element of the plant to produce Isolates.  An ‘Isolate’ is an isolated part of the plant, so the product is almost a pure CBD and creates up to 99% purity
