CBD and Your Pets

spaniel dog laying in the sun

Is CBD safe for pets?

It’s a great question; is CBD safe for pets? the answer is Yes, however, we cannot create a pet range. Why? let’s look into it.

Interestingly, the Veterinary world is the only space in the UK you can refer to CBD Oil as ‘Medicine’.

Full CBD range wooden heart

CBD is a Medicine

CBD for Pets is classed as a ‘Veterinary Medicinal Product’ currently no one in the UK is licenced for Animal CBD products.

Subsequently, only a Vet could prescribe it, That is if indeed a licenced product existed.

At present, Big Chief Hemp is unable to craft you an animal CBD Oil product.

But let’s look at the idea of CBD for your pets.

Two spaniels

Endocannabinoids Naturally occurring Receptors present in every Mammal

Let’s consider how CBD works with your endocannabinoid system (ECS for short).

Endocannabinoids also referred to as ‘endogenous cannabinoids’, are a bunch of neurotransmitters.

They send out signals to regulate the body. We have CB1 and CB2 receptors receiving the signals.

Cannabinoid receptors are present in your brain and body and these are the most abundant receptors in the human brain.

The ECS regulates a whole host of operations within your body such as:

  • temperature
  • serotonin levels
  • immune responses
  • appetite
  • pain

It’s the master controller of your bodily functions

everything with a spine

CBD does work for our pets in the same way it works for humans.  CBD is safe for Dogs, Cats horses etc.  In a much lower dose for our house pets.

In a lab, mice were administered huge doses of CBD. It presented problems to the liver in a mouse (however, it was given a Huge dose).

As recently as the 1940s it was a large staple of their diet, most of our livestock consumed hemp.

Most farm animals would be fed on straw and hemp as most farmers had to grow the crop.

Cannabinoid receptors are the most abundant receptors in the brain

hemp history

In the reign of King Henry, the 8th. A law was passed in 1535. The law decreed ‘for every 60 acres farmers owned, at least a quarter of an acre has to be dedicated to the sowing of hemp.

Such was the huge demand for hemp bi-products, rope and sails.

It seems, there was such an abundance of hemp, it makes perfect sense animals and humans consumed it as part of their diet.  Hemp was such a valuable commodity; it was used as currency to pay debts.

Cannabinoids have been consumed for centuries.

Is CBD Oil safe

At present, we don’t have much scientific evidence for CBD and pets, but we do have one or two studies.

In addition, we have anecdotal evidence from owners. They report

  • pain relief
  • relief from arthritis
  • an increase in appetite
  • less anxiety in their furry friends.

This is almost proven by the UK science world.

There is a theory, that CBD Oils will treat most conditions in pets the same as it does for humans such as epilepsy and IBS pain.

A study: Safety of CBD Oil with our pets

A study in Colorado ‘Seeking the Efficacy of Cannabidiol Treatment in Osteoarthritic Dogs.

It was a randomised, placebo-controlled experiment.   An owner and veterinarian double-blind, cross-over trial.

Twenty-two dogs had been X-rayed and confirmed to have osteoarthritis.

The dogs; depending on their size were given 2mg and 8mg doses over a 24hour period.

Our scientists observed an increase in activity and a decrease in pain. The news is looking good!

we currently use NSAID's

Mint CBD Oil Currently we use NSAIDs  on our pets,

So CBD would be a gentle alternative for the stomach.

We currently use NSAIDs (Ibuprofen) to treat osteoarthritis but this is known to have awful effects on our dog’s tummy and affects their kidney function.

In addition to reporting the good stuff, Side effects have been reported, as well as benefits.

  • It may cause drowsiness in dogs.
  • Dry mouths have also been reported.
  • High doses have temporarily lowered blood pressure.

Please note

If your pets are using prescribed medication by their Vet. It is best to avoid CBD.

CBD can interfere with the medication, the reason being, that the medications may use the same pathways.

Always consult your Vet before you give your pets CBD.

Our conclusion

Is CBD safe for pets? The answer is yes

CBD and the Menopause

Girls together cbd and menopause

Can CBD Oil help with menopause

Let’s look at how CBD Oil can help with menopause.

Menopause is not our favourite subject and one I don’t think we chat about enough, it’s a perfectly natural stage in female life.

Full CBD range wooden heart
What to expect

I had no idea what to expect other than hot flushes and didn’t know too much about those

This was only a visual observation of my wonderful Nan; who sat in the lounge red-faced and panting with a fan on her.  I remember as the years went on she had various handheld battery operated fans in her handbags, along with the bingo pens and HRT patches.

My Nan went through ‘The Change’ as she called it, for 10 years, it was brutal, I recall her difficulties with heat at night. But she never mentioned what it was or why.

The ladies in my family don’t discuss menopause. It’s something many of us go through alone and we just don’t talk about it. We are not alone, Recently, I read in a poll of almost 2,000 ladies in the UK found a fifth of women did not tell anyone at first and 43 per cent felt ‘completely alone.

The symptoms of Menopause

Most women will experience some of the symptoms, they do vary from woman to woman. For Some of us, the process is gentle but for others, it can be very uncomfortable.

The can symptoms begin months or sometimes years before your periods cease, this time is called perimenopause.  The length of time a woman can go through menopause varies widely; anything from a light 4 years, some struggle on for up to 12 years.

It begins with irregular periods. Then some of the following can occur:

Irregular cycles

Hot flushes

Mood swings

Tiredness

Weight gain

Brain fog

Reduction in sex drive

Excess night sweats

Heavy bleeding

Vaginal dryness

Pain during Sex

Osteoporosis

Urinary tract infections

This is caused by the natural decrease in oestrogen and progesterone, or a hysterectomy may have brought this on early. Ultimately, A reduction in hormones.

HRT Hormone replacement therapy

HRT Hormone replacement therapy is the usual treatment

It can be extremely effective at relieving the symptoms of menopause. It replaces some of the lost hormones via a skin patch, tablet or gel available. The big benefit of HRT is osteoarthritis, it helps to prevent any weakening of the bones.  The risks associated with combined HRT is a small risk of breast cancer and may increase the risk of a stroke in those over the ’60s.

Oestrogen can cause bloating, headaches, swelling of the body, feeling nauseous, leg cramps, vaginal bleeding, and breast tenderness.  This has more women today reaching for more natural remedies

The Advice

The advice is to maintain a good diet, Supplement with vitamin E, and vitamin D, wear light clothing, reduce stress levels, exercise, and avoid alcohol, spicy foods and caffeine.

Now we can add the ultimate recommendation, CBD oil and Menopause are a great marriage. Together with HRT or alone CBD can be a wonderful supplement for homeostasis.

Why is CBD oil good for menopause

CBD is a natural extract from the Hemp plant, there are more than 115 wonderful cannabinoids that derive from this wonderful plant. Each one has its wellness effect.

Our bodies work on a system of signals and receptors that receive the signals.  The signals send out regulation messages to balance and heal the body and keep it happy and healthy.  It’s called the Endocannabinoid system. Humans naturally produce cannabinoids, the same as the hemp plant.

The cannabinoids from the hemp plant are a great supplement for us to keep our body’s cannabinoids topped up and working correctly.

The ECS

CBD lends very well to the effects of menopause. Governing mood, hormone balancing, body temperature, and alleviating inflammation so help with joint stiffness and muscle aches.  The Endocannabinoid System, ECS for short, is the master controller for a lot of bodily functions. It speaks to our CB1 And CB2 receptors. Cannabinoid receptors are the most abundant in the human brain.

Night Time CBD To help aid a gentle, cool and calm sleep. CBD Oil can help with menopause and Big Chief Hemp has crafted a Night Time range of CBDs. Our gentle night range is available from 500mg to 4000mg. The range is infused with a natural Lavender extract.

The menopause and lavender

Lavender has properties that aid menopause. There is a study that Uses lavender aromatherapy, which shows a significant decrease in menopause symptoms.  The results clearly stated: Comparing the level of the symptoms before and after using lavender in the experimental group suggested that the rate of the menopause symptoms has decreased significantly.

Brain synapsis
The pittsburgh sleep quality

Lavender is proven to improve sleep, as measured by the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index.  This study looked at the effects of this herb in a capsule or aromatherapy.  It concluded Lavender could significantly improve the quality of sleep. It also improved sexual desire, and psychological and physical symptoms among menopausal and elderly women.

The subjects reported feelings of relaxation, happiness, and cleanness effects of having used lavender respectively.

These two ancient herbs combined to create the best natural alternative to HRT.

our conclusion

So when we ask can CBD Oil help with menopause? The conclusion is these two ancient herbs combined create the best natural alternative to HRT.

Why not give our Night Time Lavender CBD Oil a try, and have yourself a beautiful sleep?

What are terpenes

What are Terpenes

An Essential Oil

What are Terpenes, they are little gems that provide the Cannabis smells and tastes. They are a large and diverse group of naturally occurring organic compounds. The largest particles of essential oils

different varieties

Every variety of Cannabis plant has a different terpene profile.

They produce distinctive aromas and fruity or earthy tones.  Similarly, as the aroma in food adds to the taste, terpenes’ aroma adds to the benefits of taking CBD.

The gift that keeps on giving

They enhance the benefits of CBD, with an array of elements.  Subsequently, they carry similar benefits to CBD.

Each variety of Hemp is different and possesses different levels of flavonoids and lipids (fatty acids).  Sadly, some are lost during the process of extraction.  Due to the drying process of the buds, some of the little gems do not survive.

They are so delicate, that many of them are removed, before the cleaning process of the CBD extraction.  After that, they can be added back to CBD Oils once they have been cleaned and cooled. Generally, Terpenes are added back to the same batch from which they were removed.

broadspectrum

When you hear the term broad-spectrum or full-spectrum, it is describing the state of the CBD if it includes terpenes and cannabinoids. A Broad Spectrum cannabinoid will have the terpenes removed.

what are weed terpenes

A common question is;

Are weed terpenes the same as food terpenes? Yes, similarly Food and cannabis share the same terpenes.

There are over 100 naturally occurring Terpenes in Hemp

Here are just a few:

Limonene

Lemon/Limonene occurs in many foods and can be found in Lemon, Orange rind, and Juniper.  The citrus aroma comes from the Limonene.  Likewise, the cannabinoids carry similar benefits;

Useful for their antibacterial properties, help with digestion, and mild sedative effects.  They also stimulate weight loss and assist with stress.  The beautiful lemon aroma from Hemp & Cannabis comes from this Terpene.

Myrcene

Is considered the most important one.

Myrcene is present at high levels in a lot of herbs and commonly used in a lot of food flavourings. Has a musky, earthy taste and is found in hops, lemongrass and Mangos.

Wonderful Myrcene acts as an anti-inflammatory muscle relaxant and just like Limonene as a sedative.

Caryophyllene

Is pegged as the most dramatic Terpene due to its vast properties.

It’s found in many herbs and condiments, to name a few:

  • pepper
  • cloves
  • rosemary
  • oregano
  • cinnamon
  • basil

This beauty provides a party of aromas from floral to earthy to citrus to earthy.  Called beta-caryophyllene, you will find this as an ingredient in most aromatic oils. Caryo is a bigger molecule than the above terpenes.  It is a rare one that carries many direct benefits

our Suggestion

So next time someone asks What are Terpenes? you can tell them.  Terpene Oil can be purchased, giving you the smell and tastes of the plant without the CBD or THC.

Great to use in cooking or smoking, create your Vape Oils or Vape Juices.

Will I fail a drugs test

laboratory

Will I fail a drug test with CBD Oil?

Will I fail a drug test with CBD? Yes, it is possible to fail a drug test in the workplace.

This is a fair question, with more and more UK businesses looking at drug testing at work.

Drug testing in the workplace is a daunting issue for employers and employees.

in the workplace

Will I fail a drug test with CBD? Yes, it is possible to fail a drug test in the workplace.

This is a fair question, with more and more UK businesses looking at drug testing at work.

Drug testing in the workplace is a daunting issue for employers and employees.

But don’t despair.

In this article, we will explore ways to keep you safe and confident when buying CBD online.

health & saftey

Some employers believe that it is important to strike a balance.

A balance between the rights of your employees, with the health and safety of your workforce and the wider public.

Because health and safety include managing any health and safety risks posed by employees.

This extends to anyone who may be under the influence of drink or drugs whilst at work.

It is especially common in construction or transport industries. In some cases, it is contractual to have a drug test before your contract is finalised and included in a medical.

employers rights

Employers can be prosecuted if they knowingly allow an employee to be in the workplace while they are under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Your employer can’t force you to provide a sample and they will gain written consent from any person to be drug-tested first.

A separate written consent to be obtained for alcohol testing is required.

But let’s face it, You’re not going to refuse your employer but do ensure all the correct paperwork is in place before you donate your sample

operating heavy machinery

When looking at drug testing for cannabis, the drug tests are designed to pick up THC (the element of the plant that makes you high).

As THC is deemed illegal unless you have a UK cannabis prescription.

If you do have a prescription, you are still to be cautious. Some prescriptions deem you are not permitted to operate heavy machinery. Because of this your employer may want to be vigilant.

Our CBD Oils

All UK CBD Oil products are to be sold will a lot less THC. UK legislation deems no more than 1mg of THC can be a present per bottle of CBD Oil.

This is the reason Laboratory reports for your Oils are important.

The Theory is would-be consumers of UK CBD Oil shouldn’t have a problem passing a drug test.

But as with all things it is not impossible due to incorrect labelling or no lab reports.

Big Chief Hemp CBD Oils are created with a premium distillate, this means we can ensure the purity of your CBD Oil.

If you take a large dose

So Individuals who take a large dose of CBD for instance; a whole bottle of CBD Oil could theoretically fail a drug test.

And it is not advisable to drink an entire bottle. The maximum recommended daily dose is 75mg.

Full Spectrum CBD oils may contain more THC so any consumer may indeed fail a drug test for traces of THC.

positive drugs test

Failing a drug test may not always result in instant dismissal.  Most employers are reasonable and will want to discuss the outcomes with you.  Especially with your good performance.

CBD counters the effects of THC

When we consider CBD counters the effects of THC, it is highly unlikely traces of THC will have any head effects.

A UK Study including David Nutt on the Oxford University website looks at the effects of THC without CBD.

The team carried out a study of seventeen healthy people. The patients are familiar with cannabis but not regular users. The experiment worked with two strains of cannabis and one placebo.

It was observed; that THC resulted in a reduction of function for both strains of cannabis.  Dissociable effects of cannabis with and without cannabidiol on the human brain’s resting-state functional connectivity – PubMed (nih.gov)

It was concluded that “CBD restores disruption of the salience network by THC.  This explains its potential to treat disorders of salience such as psychosis and addiction.”

So CBD restores any disruptions caused by THC.

Lab

power of THC

It’s correct to say you’d prefer to see zero THC present in your drug test. Especially if you operate large machinery, however, we shouldn’t dismiss THC.

THC is a vital element of the cannabis plant. I’m a big fan.  It’s an amazing element of the cannabis plant.

As a full cannabis oil-prescribed patient, I require THC every day to assist with my pain levels.  My tolerance is high so I do not feel any head high with my medication. I go about my day just as you do.

If you get tested

It’s correct to say you’d prefer to see zero THC present in your drug test. Especially if you operate large machinery, however, we shouldn’t dismiss THC.

our conclusion

To answer the question will I fail a drug test with CBD? The answer is yes, it is possible, but it is possible to buy with confidence.

Check the lab report for your CBD Oils to ensure your Oils contain only trace elements of THC. This way you have no fear of testing positive for a drug test at your place of work.

How much CBD to take

How much CBD to take? CBD to take

CBD works much like a vitamin pill.  How much CBD to take?

As a food supplement, you are aiding your body to replace lost vitamins and help your body achieve homeostasis.

CBD is similar as it’s a phytocannabinoid plant extract that supports your naturally occurring Endocannabinoid system and stimulates your receptors to send out positive messages to the rest of your body.

Initially, it’s hard to know how much CBD to take

Full CBD range in a heart

Start at a very low dosage

We would suggest you begin with a low 500mg in a 10ml bottle.   One drop twice a day for three days.   Then increase to three times a day.  After three days increase to two drops each three times daily.  As there is no head effect, how will you know how much is enough?

Folks use CBD for a host of reasons, and everyone has different absorption rates. It’s up to you to establish what your levels are.

In the CBD Oil Oral Drops PIPET

each drop is roughly  0.05ml

Not a full pipet but a SINGLE DROP

dosage guide

A 10ml bottle of CBD Oil has 200 DROPS

In a 500mg CBD Oral Oil 10ml Bottle

Each drop contains 2.5mg of CBD if you want to take 20mg you would take 8 drops per day

Ask yourself the reason you want to take CBD?

For a sense of wellbeing; it’s recommended to use just 0.5mg – 1.5mg a day or you may want a tad more.  If you are recovering from an illness, it’s suggested you use more.  Again, always build up your levels at a gentle pace.  There is a point at which you will plateau, and find your ideal dosage.

You found your level

The day you increase and don’t feel any more benefit than the previous dosage. You found your level.  Your levels may change over time, depending on how you are feeling.  You will get to establish those areas yourself.  To find my levels, I kept a diary and looking back could see the improvements over the weeks, until I arrived at my level.  It is more apparent to me now, I am aware when I’ve forgotten to take it.

How much CBD to Take

People take CBD for different reasons.  So the dosage will be different for each case.  Some people have asked how much CBD to take to assist with sleep we would say around 1 to 6 mg.

We have been asked how much CBD it takes to help with tremors?;  we would suggest anything between 5 and 10 mg.

How much CBD to take For Chronic pain is anything up to 20mg of THC recommended.

Please Note : Medical Advice

Do not exceed more than 70mg of CBD in 24 hours, unless otherwise directed by your Medical Professional

Research has indicated, that CBD may inhibit the CYP450 liver enzyme, responsible for the metabolism of several medications.  This can potentially have an adverse effect when taken with Anti-cancer medications ( for example epipodophyllotoxin derivatives such as etoposide and teniposide).

Certain blood thinners (warfarin/coumadin)

Certain anti-seizure medicines ( for example clobazam, and or norclobazam).

Always.

Consumers should always seek approved medical guidance if taking other medications or during pregnancy, before consuming CBD Oil  as per MHRA & FSA guidelines**

How CBD works

CBD Pipet

How does CBD work?

To discover How CBD works, we meet Professor Mechoulam.

It was found to have benefits; by Raphael Mechoulam.  An Organic Chemist and Professor of Medicinal Chemistry at the University of Jerusalem in 1963;

Interestingly, all Mammals have an Endocannabinoid system (ECS).

The endocannabinoid system (ECS) is a biological system of Neurotransmitters.  It’s a network of cell signalling that attaches to cannabinoid receptors throughout the central nervous system.  This includes the brain and the immune system.  That is to say, a network of correcting messages is sent and received. Thus, making sure our bodies are working in balance.

Endocannabinoids ~ Naturally occurring Receptors present in every Mammal

CB1 and CB2 are the primary cannabinoid receptors we have identified.  These Receptors work in almost every area of mammals.  Further Studies by Dr Mechoulam and US researchers have realised an entire ECS system.  It works in harmony with the Hemp plant, truly a nature’s gift.

ECS is the master controller

The ECS is the master controller in your body it works with your immune system.  It regulates your body temperature and CBD can mimic serotonin correcting any deficiency and levelling your mood.  Furthermore, your ECS regulates your sleep and misdirects your pain.

The list goes on, it’s a powerful anti-inflammatory and improves motor skills.  Most importantly can block certain cancer cell growth.

A recent study has concluded CBD inhibits the infection of COVID19 in Mice and it has merited further medical studies. Exciting times!

Brain synapsis

Cannabinoid receptors are the most abundant

Cannabinoid receptors are the most abundant receptors in the brain

If you are out of sorts, CBD works with your ECS system.  Like turning on light switches, CB flicks on the neuroreceptors in your nervous system, including your brain.

Extracted Phytocannabinoids from Plants are a Supplement for deficient Endocannabinoids in your body.

Our ECS system sends out regulating signals throughout your body, therefore re-balancing our Homeostasis.  Illness can thrive if the body fails to produce sufficient endocannabinoids.

Taking CBD plant extract can aid your body and mind to stay healthy.

Hemp was consumed by humans and livestock for thousands of years.   It was a common feature in our diet and the materials around us; such as cloth and rope.

Only recently we have stopped using hemp

It has been a supplement to humans for centuries.  Only in the 1950s and 1970, did this change and cannabis oil ceased to be a medicine and in our food. We have been missing hemp from our foods and medicine cabinets.

We are so proud to bring traditional remedies back to your shelves.

how long does CBD oil take to work for anxiety?

One of the most common questions we receive is: how long does CBD oil take to work for anxiety?  The answer is, not long.  It can take anything from two to four weeks.  Remember to always begin with a low dose.  Too much too soon can have the opposite effect.

So in answer to the question, how long does CBD oil take to work for anxiety, the answer is only a matter of weeks.

Our Conclusion

PhytoCannaindoids from plants are Natural Supplements for EndoCannabinoids that are naturally occurring in your body.

Our bodies benefit from CBD supplements.

We could use the whole plant and go back to using Sustainable Hemp paper?.

Or we could recreate the UK rag trade, creating cloth and jobs at the same time.

CBD Extraction Process

manual cbd press

the extraction process

Ever wondered how CBD is extracted from Hemp?

Hemp CBD Oil is the latest health product to hit the shelves. It’s being advertised like snake oil to cure ills.  Not quite but it does offer enormous benefits.  It is extracted from the ‘Hemp’ plant.  A non-intoxicating plant. Safe for you and your whole family.

it comes from sativa l family

We love all things Hemp at Big Chief.

What is the best extraction process for CBD Oil?

Ultimately the three main ways to extract CBD.

  •     Oil Extraction
  •     CO2 Extraction
  •     Solvent Extraction

With pros and cons to each method.  CBD Extraction is a highly skilled process. It can take a lot of expensive equipment.

many ways to milk a seed

A company in Canada use a large wooden screw to press the buds.  It’s a natural and traditional method dating back hundreds of years.  This is our favourite method because it’s a whole plant extract.

The hemp flowers are soaked in refined oil, usually Coconut Oil.  Coconut oil is chosen because it’s a thin oil.  Damp buds are popped into the top of a funnel and dropped through to the screw.  The screw is turned and the buds are pressed.  Tightly pressed so Hemp oil comes out the other side.  CBD Oil resembles the consistency of honey with a green tinge.  The end product is a beautiful golden-green juice.  A full plant extract with the CBDs, flavonoids and Terpenes.

CBD oil CO2 extraction process

Below is a simplified version of the process

CO2 is Carbon Dioxide, compressed air.  It is a gas that consists of one part carbon & two parts oxygen.  It’s Non-combustible and nontoxic. I’ll try and cut through the science of the CBD oil CO2 extraction process.

In a Lab

Hemp buds are dropped into a high-pressure chamber and the chamber is sealed.

Advanced Liquid Co2

many ways to milk a seed

Advanced Liquid Co2 is added (supercritical C02) to the chamber.  High pressure is applied from the top of the device. Plunged, pushing Co2 liquid through the buds.  Hemp buds sit with the CO2 for a couple of hours.  The mush is pushed into the third chamber, a separator machine.

Final Chamber

Evaporation occurs in the third and final chamber removing the CO2 and leaving a lovely oil at the end.  CO2 is the preferred method of extraction because there are no solvents used.  No impurities are added and it’s fully automated.  From there it goes straight into products pure and unmolested.

Distilled CBD

A step for further refinement and distillation.  We go to a traditional laboratory. Lots of jars and tubes to condensers.  Temperature plays the biggest role in this process.  It’s a system of heating liquids and cooling liquids then catching vapers.  Crude hemp oil is heated up in a boiling flask to around 230c.  This flask sits inside a heated box, which stirs and heats the oil.  The oil creates vapers, and the vapers are caught in a tall distillation glass.

its all about the vaper

The vaper travels to a cooling chamber.  In this cooling chamber, the vapour turns back into a liquid.  This liquid travels down the chamber to the second set of flasks.    Three flasks, two collect terpenes, solvents, and undesirable bits.  The final One collects the CBD Distillate, CBD Gold.

cbd isolate

CBD Isolate

Further refinement in a centrifugal machine  A CBD Ethanol extraction process is used.  Ethanol is added to the hemp buds.  The buds are added to a machine, and it spins and separates each element of the plant to produce Isolates.  An ‘Isolate’ is an isolated part of the plant, so the product is almost a pure CBD and creates up to 99% purity

our conclusion

There are many ways to extract CBD, but most are good. The old school and traditional ways are our favourites.

Does CBD work for Pain

man curled up in pain on the floor

DOES cbd work for Pain relief

Cannabidiol is a popular alternative compared to prescription pain relief (such as opioids). Especially, for people who have chronic pain and have become reliant upon those habit-forming medications.  Even though more research is required to verify the pain-relieving properties of CBD, it’s clear patients are benefiting from trying these CBD products.

Full CBD range wooden heart

why is cbd being chosen over pain meds

CBD is becoming a ‘quick-fix’ for many medical conditions and symptoms for anything from psoriasis to attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

Shinning Star

It seems to be becoming the medical industry’s shining star’.  Which has seen researchers jump at the opportunity to gain a better understanding of how this product is helping people.

There currently aren’t a lot of clinical trials about CBD for pain relief in humans. But preclinical tests are being carried out on animals, for example, animals with painful arthritis.   These studies have shown that CBD reduces pain and inflammation and has very few side effects.

how does it work

For thousands of years, people have been using CBD as a natural remedy for pain relief.  Still, the medical community have only recently begun studying its benefits and how it works in-depth.  CBD reacts with the endocannabinoid receptors in our brain and immune system (the tiny proteins attached to our cells).

These receptors receive chemical signals and respond by creating anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving effects that aid with the management of pain.  The current theory is that the endocannabinoid system has two cannabinoid receptors: CB1 and CB2. CB1 receptors are in the brain.  They are believed to be associated with cognitive actions including mood, memory, thinking and appetite.

CB1 and CB2 receptors

The CB2 receptors are found in the immune system and are responsible for how the body reacts to pain and inflammation.   THC attaches to the CB1 receptors (which explains why using THC rich Cannabis can affect behaviour and appetite).

In contrast, CBD creates a positive effect on the CB2 receptors whereby the body is enticed to generate more of its cannabinoids.  This is how CBD is believed to work, but more research is being carried out to ensure that this is entirely accurate.

what kind of pain can it help

It is said that CBD Oils and CBD-infused products can help with arthritis pain relief, symptoms surrounding cancer treatment and migraine pain relief.

For arthritis pain, it’s advised that a topical CBD-infused product is used and applied directly to the skin where the arthritis is causing pain.   So researchers have tried this method of treatment on rats with arthritis for four days and noticed a significant decrease in inflammation without any side effects. It does not take long to begin to work.

This test, so far, has only been carried out on animals, so more research needs to take place to see if it is as effective on humans.   However, with most topicals designed to help with arthritis pain, it’s a case of trying products to see if they work for you and whether you like the product. A guide to CBD topicals, balms and lotions coming soon.

The Research

There have been case studies that have shown people with MS (Multiple Sclerosis) trying CBD oil to help reduce the pain felt during muscle spasms.  Muscle spasms are one of the most common symptoms of MS and can cause extreme pain.   MS patients that have tried CBD oil have sometimes reported a reduction in the frequency of their spasms as well as pain relief.   But these results are modest and haven’t got scientific verification yet, we are mid-trials.

There have been reports that CBD has been helping cancer patients reduce the pain from their cancer treatments.  Research has also been carried out on animals to see whether CBD can shrink cancerous tumours, which was successful in some of these animals.   Still, there currently isn’t enough research to see this success with tumours in humans.

However, many researchers have begun to test how CBD can help ease the pain related to cancer treatment.

are there any side effects

As with most medications, there are a few side effects that can occur in some people, but usually, most people tolerate CBD oil well.  The most popular side effects are believed to be tiredness, diarrhoea, lack of appetite and weight gain or weight loss.

Although there currently isn’t a lot of research and conclusive data to support CBD oil and CBD-infused products for pain relief.   It’s agreed that these products have a lot of potential.

There are several CBD products to try when it comes to managing pain, and it all depends on where the pain is.  For arthritis, we would recommend trying a minimum of 1000mg CBD Oil Oral Drops.  CBD works best as an anti-inflammatory, for pain relief, it is best combined with THC.

In contrast, CBD capsules and oils may be better for pain management related to cancer treatments.

visually different

The grown plants look slightly different.

Legal – Hemp has a thicker stalk, with slimmer leaves and much fewer branches and can grow to 20 feet high.

Illegal – Cannabis is often shorter, with slender stems with a dense growth of leaves and buds. Usually, This plant will grow up to 6ft

CBD comes from the Hemp plant, and medical cannabis comes from the Cannabis plant.
